The history of Hawaii began when its tranquility in being a lost cluster of islands in the South Pacific, began being colonized by the Polynesian Islands. Since then until today, there have been many events that have passed through this rgion. From the Sistema Kapu, to our day in age. Kames Cook, British explorer, arrived to this region for the first time in 1778. During this time, Kamehameha I was the king of the islands. Through various dynasties of Kamehameha, five of them to be exact, and after the death of the last of them, a popular referendum was celebrated that gave a rise to power to the Dynasty Kalakaua, a legacy that endured until the end of the 19th Century. If was then that the United States performed its first coup d'état in its attempt to take the islands into its own power.
At this time, Hawaii began to open itself to the world, exporting sugar at the beginning of 1898, and became an unofficial U.S. state, but didn't actually hold official status until 61 years later.
The United States then began to use the island as a strategic point. Not in vain, in 1941, on the Island of Oahu, one of the most bloody and atrocious attacks took place on Pearl Harbour, killing many. It was an attack carried out by the Japanese, which dragged the United States into World War II.
Later on, the islands became popular to surfers in the 1960's and in the 70's, Hawaii became a preferred destination for surf and windsurf lovers.
Tourism is strong in Hawaii, especially its pretty beaches, and fantastic spots to go surfing or practice windsurf. |
